Cross Country Fun Ride & BBQ

Sunday 27th June 2010

Family member Robert Beaton says :

In April 2009 our son Kyle was diagnosed with Fragile X. At the time neither my wife or myself had any idea what Fragile X Syndrome was. Since that time we know that fragile X is a genetically inherited condition causing varying degrees of learning disability and developmental delay. It affects both boys and girls and is often accompanied by autistic like behavioural traits.

Our challenge is to now not only raise money for the Fragile X Society, but also to raise awareness of Fragile X.

We have arranged 2 cycle events. The first for the more competitive riders out there, will take place on the Red Run at High Lodge, which is approx 11 miles long, and there will be a choice of 1 -3 circuits, this will be your choice. The second will be for familys and those who want to just have a bit of fun, but at the same time raise money for a good cause.

There will be a BBQ for all who take part after the event. There will be an admission fee of £3.00 per person (under 5's free) this will cover the cost of a Hamburger and a Hotdog, salad & drink. All children will recieve a goody bag for taking part.

Isklar water have generously offered to supply us bottles of water for all persons taking part in the ride.

If you are interested in taking part in either of these events and would like more details please email rob@swallowmax.co.uk

IF YOU CANT MAKE THE EVENT PLEASE FEEL FREE TO VISIT THE LINK BELOW & MAKE A DONATION TO A VERY WORTHY CHARITY:-

Marathon Runner EXTRAORDINAIRE!

8 Marathons in 12 Months (Challenge 2010)

When Anthony Clark's nephew and godson was diagnosed with fragile X in February 2009 Anthony wanted to do something to show his support --- and decided that he would set himself the challenge of completing 123.4 miles in 6 months in competitve races to raise awareness of fragile X and to raise funds for the Society.......

That was last year - Anthony's magnificant efforts were very well rewarded --- and now for 2010! Here's what Anthony has in mind next:

VLMThis challenge has 2 goals. Firstly, to raise money and awareness of Fragile X and The Fragile X Society and also for me to improve my marathon performance and time.

Completing Marathon de Paris 2009 in less than 3 hours, entitles me to a 'good for age' place and automatic entry to all official marathons including the Virgin London Marathon & Real-Berlin Marathon.

My Challenge 2010 'target time' for 26.2 miles is sub 02:50:00. This will be working towards a future time of sub 02:45:00, the time required for the ultimate Championship entry place.

Included in this challenge I am taking place in Votwo's signature endurance running event the Jurassic Coast Challenge along the Dorset coast path. A 26.2 mile marathon each day for 3 days running, jogging, walking or crawling from Lyme Regis to Poole along beautiful but brutal coastal terrain.  Heed the warning: The cowardly won't start and the weak won't finish.

Please support Anthony, very little will do, and of course we shall all be very grateful if you can sponsor him in a big way! - there is a lot more information and ways in whcih to sponsor him on his website at http://www.fragilerunner.com/

The 4th Fragile X 100 Mile Bike Ride

Liz Henderson and her fellow fundraisers completed a very successful day's fundraising for the Society by riding from St Andrews to Blairhall (100 mile round trip) on June 20th 2009. ..... followed with a BBQ and a beer or two afterwards. Thank you very much Liz, and all your friends who took part, and everyone who sponsored you - the funds raised will enable us to continue our support work for our fragile X families.

The money raised by their gargantuan efforts is still coming in....but it is still possible to sponsor her or any of the riders who took part, for more information please contact Liz on Liz@brucehaven.fsnet.co.uk

A New Social Dance Company Launches in Lincoln

The following are excerpts from the flyer for this fundraising activity :

Lincoln University graduate Becky Jones and Bishop Grosseteste University College student LeoSpowage launch their social dance company ‘DanceFX’ on Saturday 21st March at Sturton By Stow Village Hall with a Charity Fun Dance.

Becky said “We have had considerable support from both LincolnUniversity and Bishop Grosseteste in setting up our company  and as I have a nephew who has Fragile-X genetic disorder we thought an immediate and fun way of thanking the community for that support was to hold a charity fun dance in aid of the Fragile-X Society.

Sturton has an excellent village hall and is where I was brought up so it is the obvious place to launch our new social dance company.”   Leo, from Nettleham, explained “At our dances we lead and instruct our clients in a range of different dances.

Dancing has become very popular and is recognised as an excellent way of keeping fit, with some local authorities introducing dance lessons into schools to help tackle child obesity.   Our company offers a range of dance related activities including workshops in modern jive, burlesque, styling and latin dance, as well as freestyles, charity events and similar activities!

For those wanting a more personal teaching experience, Dance FX offers private tuition to individuals and couples, of any level of ability, including preparation for special events such as the first dance at their wedding or important business dinner dances.”

Tickets for the Charity Fun Dance at Sturton Village Hall on the 21st March at 7.30 are £5.00 (all of which goes directly to the Fragile X Society) and available from  01427 788568, 01400 250949 or at the door on the night.

LATEST UPDATE : This was a very successful launch for Dance FX - we are grateful for thier support and wish Becky and Leo well for the future.
