On Saturday 28th September 2019 I held a race night with a difference to raise money for Fragile X.
Instead watching a horse race on a screen, we got our punters involved! We carved six miniature horses out of wood and attached a long length of string to each. Attendees then sat with their backs to the horses and once they heard ‘go!’ began winding the string around a pole on their laps to get them across the finish line!
Half-way through the night we also had a raffle draw. It was an amazing evening, so much fun and everyone who attended said how much they enjoyed the night.
The event that prompted me to hold this charity evening happened four years ago when my cousin and her husband had a beautiful baby boy. Unfortunately, as he was getting older, they noticed he was late in reaching all milestones including sitting, crawling, walking and talking. After constantly speaking to the health visitor about their concerns, they were finally listened to by a paediatrician. He was diagnosed with global development delay, speech delay, hyper mobility, low muscle tone and a blood test was arranged that discovered he had Full Mutation of Fragile X.
It was then recommended that other people in the family get tested and we were given the news that four people are Fragile X carriers and five have Full Mutation, four of those being children.
After receiving this diagnosis, I have made it my mission to spread the word about Fragile X. What the symptoms and difficulties are that come from having this condition, and especially how to get the right education and help.
With hard work, determination and the help of all the people that attended, we managed to raise £835!!!!
I am so thrilled, I can’t tell you. I know that all this money is going to be put to good use.
We are so grateful for Lisa's incredible fundraising! It is these type of events that provide us with the vital funds to support and empower the Fragile X community across the UK. Thank you so much!
